{"id":55,"date":"2022-01-30T21:43:19","date_gmt":"2022-01-30T20:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/?p=55"},"modified":"2023-01-21T20:58:01","modified_gmt":"2023-01-21T19:58:01","slug":"vocabulary-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/index.php\/2022\/01\/30\/vocabulary-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Language Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Notice how in English we capitalize each word, which is not the case in Croatian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/VT-Test-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"special-days\" class=\"wp-image-80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/VT-Test-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/VT-Test-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/VT-Test-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/VT-Test-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/VT-Test.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of <em>very<\/em> + simple adjective, you can use these more precise ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-16-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-240\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nouns <em>information<\/em>, <em>evidence<\/em>, and <em>advice<\/em> are uncountable singular nouns in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-02-05-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-243\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We usually make plural nouns by adding &#8220;s&#8221; or &#8220;es&#8221;, but some English nouns have irregular plural forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-11-6-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-244\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some words are spelled differently in British and American English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-18-6-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-245\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, some words are spelled the same but pronounced differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-02-07-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-246\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful about the word order in indirect questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-09-07-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we use the emphatic <em>do<\/em>, i.e. its forms <em>did <\/em>and <em>does<\/em>, we have to reset the main verb to its base form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-16-07-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Since<\/em> has two distinct meanings, with no connection whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-09-08-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We use either <em>if <\/em>or <em>whether <\/em>while reporting yes\/no questions. In addition to that, we need to shift tense back to past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-17-8-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-250\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at the formal counterparts of these common words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-20-06-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-251\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The subjunctive mood is rarely used in English, but we still find it, for instance, in conditional sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-29-08-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-252\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Whose <\/em>is used both for animate and inanimate nouns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-03-09.2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-253\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Much less<\/em> refers to something already mentioned and saves you time while writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-17-09-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-254\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Latin abbreviations are quite common in English. Check what they stand for and what they mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-24-09-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-255\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some adverbs (e.g. hardly, little, never, only, scarcely and seldom) have negative meaning. When we use them at the beginning of the sentence, we have to invert the subject and the auxiliary verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-1-10-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-256\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When you want to express surprise, use the combination <em>not only <\/em>+ <em>but also<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-08-10-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-259\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Horses, horses, everywhere!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-15-10-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-260\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lest<\/em> usually takes a verb in the subjunctive (example no. 1), but you can also use <em>should<\/em> (example no. 2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-22-10-2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-261\" width=\"780\" height=\"551\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you been aware of this spelling difference? Just to be clear, they are pronounced exactly the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-28-01-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-262\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>News<\/em> is uncountable and this carries certain grammatical consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-16-02-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-263\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>TV series <\/em>has the same singular and plural form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-25-02-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-264\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>Darts<\/em> is a singular uncountable noun, the same as <em>billiards<\/em> and <em>dominoes<\/em>.<br>Furthermore, when these nouns are used in front of other nouns, they lose the final &#8220;s&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-11-03-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-266\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you differentiate between all these berries?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-12-06-2022-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For any further help, ask forest rangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/VT-01-07-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-268\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We usually don&#8217;t use the definite article with country names, but there are some exceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/VT-12-08-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-495\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The forms of these two verbs are quite confusing. Keep in mind that the left one is regular and the right one is irregular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/VT-27-08-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-584\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>&#8220;Then&#8221; means &#8220;after that&#8221; while &#8220;than&#8221; is used when comparing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/labudinstrukcije.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/VT-01-09-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-585\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>When it means &#8220;the majority of&#8221;, we use &#8220;most&#8221; without &#8220;the&#8221; (see examples 1 &amp; 2).
